20+ Easy Homemade Halloween Costumes for Babies

Cheap, easy-to-make and quick costumes for your baby

Mailman

What you need:

  • Blue pants, button-down shirt and cap
    Safety pins
  • Three small stuffed dogs
    Small messenger bag stuffed with a few pieces of old mail
  • Red, blue, yellow and white craft foam
  • Hot-glue gun
  1. From the inside of the pants, pin two stuffed dogs by their mouths to ankles. Attach a dog to the mailbag as well.
  2. Using craft foam, create a U.S. Mail badge and pin (or glue) to shirt pocket. Cut out letters from craft foam and glue "U.S. Mail" to cap. (Our model wore his backward!)

Cotton Candy

What you need:

  • 12 yards of pink tulle
  • Pale-pink or white leotard
  • Hot-glue gun
  • 16 by 20-inch white oak tag or a craft-foam sheet
  • Elastic measured to fit under chin
  1. To attach tulle to the leotard: Make a loop in the tulle every foot or so, twist the loop and then glue to the leotard at the twist. Don't worry about perfection: Loose, lumpy and bumpy is what cotton candy looks like.
  2. For the hat, roll a paper cone out of white oak tag or a craft-foam sheet, glue, and punch holes in the sides then thread elastic through, knotting the ends, to make the chin strap.

Smarty-Pants

  1. With ahot-glue gun, glue30 to 35 rolls of Smarties candies to the front of a pair of solid-color dark pants. You can place them in rows or randomly. (If you decide to glue the candy rolls in the back of the pants as well, avoid the top section so that your child can sit down comfortably.)
  2. Glue individual Smarties candies to aninexpensive headband or cap.
  3. Wear with abright top andbright shoes.

Princess Leia

What you need:

  • Enough 2-inch-wide white ribbon to tie around waist
  • Silver duct tape
  • Two 8 by 11-inch sheets brown craft felt
  • Hot-glue gun
  • Inexpensive brown headband
  • Oversize white T-shirt
  • White tights or leggings
  1. Decorate the ribbon belt with the duct tape to look like it has a buckle (or buckles).
  2. To create hair buns: Roll, then coil, each sheet of felt and glue one to each side of the headband.

Road

What you need:

  • Roll of yellow duct tape
  • Black pants and top
  • Hot-glue gun
  • 8 small toy cars
  • 6 by 8-inch sheets yellow and green glitter craft foam
  • 1 pack stick-on letters
  • Elastic headband
  1. Use tape to make line on top. Glue cars on clothes.
  2. From yellow foam, make merge sign. Glue to pants.
  3. Cut a street-sign shape out of green foam and, with letters, spell your street. Staple sign to elastic headband.

Gumball Machine

  1. Paint aplastic soda cap withsilver paint. With ahot-glue gun, glue tored hat.
  2. Cut "5 cents" out ofblack craft foam and glue to pants leg.
  3. Cut hood and sleeves off aclear raincoat; put on backward (snaps in back). Use a30-inch piece of elastic as a belt; blouse coat over it. (You can also use a clear bag.)
  4. Blow up20 multicolored balloons halfway. Put in through back of coat. Snap up coat; cut off excess, if any.

Old Candy Land game

What you need:

  • Piece of cardboard slightly smaller than game board
  • 3 to 4 feet of wide ribbon
  • Hot-glue gun
  • Candy hearts
  • Craft-foam crown
  • Large lollipop as prop
  1. Glue game board to cardboard, leaving a 1-inch flap. Punch holes in the flap and thread ribbon through. Tie behind neck.
  2. Glue game pieces to board.
  3. Glue cards from the game and candy hearts onto crown.

Frenchman

What you need

  • Striped shirt
  • Dark pants
  • Red bandana
  • Dark beret
  • Black eyeliner
  • Small French baguette
  1. Dress child in the striped shirt and dark pants. Tie on bandana, loosely and move knot slightly off center. Top off with dark beret.
  2. Draw on a curly mustache with eyeliner. Liquid will go on easier and darker, but you can use pencil, too.
  3. Use baguette as a prop.

Lobster

What you need:

  • Red hoodie and pants
  • Black pipe cleaner
  • Hot-glue gun
  • Two 1-inch black pom-poms
  • 3 pairs red rubberized gloves (or a fan of red paper)
  • 2 red oven mitts, as claws
  1. From inside the hood's top, push both ends of pipe cleaner through a few inches apart. Glue a pom-pom to each end.
  2. For tail (not shown): Glue gloves together in a fan shape. Pin to the waistband of the shirt (or glue on a paper fan.)
  3. Wear oven mitts as claws.

Bee

What you need:

  • Black pipe cleaner, cut in half
  • Black headband
  • Hot-glue gun
  • Two 2 1/2-inch black pom-poms
  • Roll of yellow duct tape
  • Black long-sleeved bodysuit
  • Black tights
  1. Wrap half of pipe cleaner around headband, with end standing up as an antenna; glue one pom-pom to end. Repeat for second antenna.
  2. Stick duct-tape stripes to front of bodysuit. Don't wrap all the way around or body-suit will be hard to get on.
